Evergreen CDX

On May 11–12 2013, the 3rd in a series of cyber defense exercises (Evergreen CDX) with the Washington Army National Guard will be taking place at Camp Murray, Washington and in Honolulu, HI. The “Evergreen CDX” is designed to bring practitioners in industry and government together with students to practice cybersecurity event response, mitigation, and strategy. By having practitioners from industry, government, and students from local colleges and universities we are able to foster a diverse team setting that helps promote communication, leadership, and relationships. This is increasingly important as every sector attempts to handle growing cybersecurity threats, the task of reporting events, and determining what resources are available from government agencies for additional help. This event is a collaboration between UW Bothell CSS, the CIAC, University of Hawaii, Manoa, Washington Army National Guard and the Hawaii National Guard.

Big Splash Cyber Defense Exercise  is a four-day event that aims to empower cyber security responders with skills and techniques to properly plan, manage, and respond to cybersecurity incidents related to critical infrastructure. This event brings practitioners and students together for 4 days of intensive learning and exercises to reinforce information assurance and cybersecurity skills as well as building networks of trust through the cyberdefense community.

For those of you who can’t make it to Hawaii…
There is also a remote team to tie in students and practitioners in Seattle through UW Bothell. The Washington contingent will be members of the Red Team coordinated by a practitioner from the NSA. Who Can Participate?: Cyber Defenders in DOE, other government agencies, critical infrastructure, and college students

Tracer FIRE (Forensic Incident Response Exercise) is a four-day even that aims to empower cyber security responders (cyber defenders in DOE, other government agencies, critical infrastructure, and college students) with skills and techniques to recognize and dissect nefarious network activity and malicious software. These events include parallel lab-oriented training tracks followed by a capture-the-flag contest to test newly acquired skills and knowledge in a challenging and motivating environment.

The exercise consists of 2 days of intensive training on a single subject, followed by a 2½-day game in which contestants are placed on a team and must use their new and existing skills to compete with other teams for points across multiple categories. Tracer FIRE is part of the Tracer series of events to build the cyber defense community.

National Guard Hosts Cyber Defense Challenge with UW Bothell CSS & CIAC on Camp Murray

WASHINGTON MILITARY DEPARTMENT

JOINT FORCE HEADQUARTERS, WASHINGTON NATIONAL GUARD CAMP MURRAY, WASHINGTON  98430–5000

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  December 5, 2012

CAMP MURRAY, Wash. — The Washington Army National Guard is partnering with the University of Washington Bothell Computing & Software Systems and the Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity to host the Cyber Defense Challenge this weekend at Camp Murray.  Interested media are welcome to visit and cover the event at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8 on Camp Murray.

The Cyber Defense Challenge is the second of a three event series designed to challenge and sharpen cyber defenders from the military and civilian communities.

This collaboration between the Guard and the University of Washington is one of many essential partnerships among the public and private sectors designed to enhance cyber defense skills.  Protecting critical infrastructure and services is in everyone’s best interest,” said Major General Bret Daugherty, the Adjutant General and commander of the Washington National Guard.

Approximately 50 people will participate, which will include college students, a few high school students, civilian state employees, and Washington National Guard members.  Participants will be briefed on recent lessons learned and break into 8–10 person teams.  Teams will work together to defend different aspects of a hypothetical electric power company’s network, while assigned opposing forces attack the network.  The goal is to compel network defenders to continually think through difficult challenges, and find innovative solutions in defending the network.

The Washington National Guard has units and personnel dedicated to cyber defense in its Air and Army branches.  The citizen-soldiers and airmen of the Washington National Guard are dedicated to the mission of safeguarding lives and property in Washington State, and serving as sentinels for freedom overseas. We are Neighbors Helping Neighbors through a Tradition of Service.
