Knovel has fixed the proxy access problems on their new platform and it is now working from off-campus. We have migrated (again!) to the new Knovel platform and access from off-campus is available without creating a ‘MyKnovel’ account.
Due to the off-campus proxy access problem with the new Knovel platform, we have temporarily switched our access back to the old Knovel platform which does support off-campus access. Knovel is working on providing off-campus proxy access with their new platform. When that is working and has been tested, we will switch our access back to the new platform.
Occasionally users will see the error message “A system error has occurred” when trying to connect to the Web of Science database. Thomson/ISI tech support describes the reason for this error:
A Web of Knowledge session is opened in a browser. Eventually, the Web of Knowledge window is closed, but the Internet Browser remains open (with other websites, etc.). After some time passes, the Web of Knowledge session expires. If a user tries again to open a new window for Web of Knowledge, they run into this error if they have not shut down the browser.
If you see this error, the solution is to completely quit and restart the browser.
Beginning August 15th, 2013, Knovel will be upgrading their platform. As a result of their upgrade, off-campus access to Knovel using the ‘Off-campus Access’ proxy will no longer work. Users will still be able to access Knovel from off-campus by creating a ‘My Knovel’ account.
We hope to have proxy access to Knovel restored by the end of September.
