  • Applications for electives at LCME* accredited institutions and ACGME** accredited Residency programs are due a minimum 2 weeks before the start date.
  • Applications for electives at non-LCME accredited institutions or ACGME accredited Residency programs are a due a minimum of 2 months before the start date.

*Most university programs (ex. Stanford University Hospital) are LCME accredited, whereas private clinics and community-based programs (ex. Providence Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane) are not. Check for LCME accredited schools here

Please note:

  • A course which was previously passed may be repeated one time for credit to received financial aid.
  • Special assignment electives cannot be used for research credits nor to fulfill Advanced Patient Care requirements.
  • You must get your elective approved by the department that administers your preceptor’s specialty (ex. FAMED electives cannot be approved by Internal Medicine).
  • It is not appropriate use of Special Assignment Electives to take an established elective during an off-calendar timeframe.

Application Process

  1. Determine whether you are going to an LCME accredited institution or ACGME  accredited residency program for which you intend to apply.
  2. If YES – Skip to “Special Assignment Credit Approval” form
  3. If NO – Fill out the “Student Agreement” form and have your main preceptor/ supervisor fill out the “Provider Agreement” form
  4. Fill out the top half of the “Special Assignment Credit Approval” form
  5. Send the entire packet to the appropriate Clerkship Administrator
  6. Department reviews for educational and clinical merit; if the department approves they will send to the Clinical Curriculum Office for final approval
  7. Curriculum adds the clerkship to E*Value and notification Registration and Scheduling to add the clerkship to your schedule

If you decide not to take a Special Assignment elective after you have already gotten approval and been registered, be sure you inform the site director, appropriate Clerkship Administrator, Regional Administrator, and Registration to have the rotation removed from your schedule.
