Innovative Writing Center to Open in New Space in Odegaard Library

The Odegaard Writing & Research Center (OWRC) will open in an exciting new space on the first floor of the library in late June and with a new and innovative program. The library’s reference service and the OWRC’s writing service will work together in the space to provide students easy access to expert help in completing their writing and research projects.  The OWRC will have cafe-height counters, round tables for tutoring sessions, a meeting room, a small reference library, and a welcome area with comfortable seating. It will be a welcoming space for students! See photographs of the new OWRC and the rest of the first floor at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ouglrenovation/.

Ode is Changing!

Odegaard Library will be changing rapidly as we approach completion of the renovation.  On Wednesday, the remaining construction wall on the 2nd floor will come down, opening up a clear view of the atrium from all sides and all the way up to the skylight. The new staircase is getting wood trim and the new wood ceilings are being installed. Carpet laying has begun today on the 3rd floor where there has been cement floor. The 2nd floor will get new carpet on the cement floors next week.

Two active learning classrooms are being constructed. New technology, instructor podiums and student tables will be installed beginning on April 15. You may also notice the casework painted a warm poppy color. One of these units will have six computers; another will have print and scan stations. The casework will be getting interactive signs and wood slats later in April or early May.

Odegaard Library Will Be Closed During Spring Break

Odegaard Library will close for spring break from March 23, 2013 — March 31, 2013.  The closure will allow the contractor to complete the permanent entry lobby, which will be located just south of the temporary lobby.  We will re-open at 8am on Monday, April 1, the first day of Spring Quarter.

When we are closed March 23–31, 2013:

January 2013 Construction Update

Odegaard has re-opened after our winter break closure. Lots of construction progress during the closure, most dramatically the addition of new glass walls on the 3rd floor and the installation of the wood sculpture ceiling. We are beginning to see the new staircase take shape, too. View photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ouglrenovation/.

Here’s a quick summary from our contractor, Mortenson, of the milestones expected over the next few months:

3rd floor: Steel railings, wood/glass into the railings, lighting, dry wall, door frames installed.

2nd floor: atrium stair treads/landings, steel railings, wood/glass into the railings, wood ceiling under the stairs installed.

1st floor: atrium stair treads/risers, drywall, wood ceiling, interactive walls, sliding doors, atrium seating, a/v equipment installed.

Also on the 1st floor the new vestibule will be built.

Odegaard Closed for Winter Break; Contractor Working in the Building

Odegaard Library is closed for Winter Break, December 15, 2013 through January 6, 2013. The library will re-open on Monday, January 7 at 8am.

Our contractor, Mortenson Construction, and several sub-contractors are making great progress on the renovation during the break.  Glass walls on the third floor are being built.  What the contractors call the “dance floor”  will be removed; it provided access to build the skylight and the wood slat ceiling.  Soffits on the 2nd and 3rd floors are being painted (and repaired where needed.)  The renovation of the entry lobby on the 1st floor has begun. The lobby is being divided approximately in half with the north side planned to be a comfortable seating area. For now, that side of the lobby will continue to be used as the entry lobby.
