UW Holidays for Outlook/Exchange 2014-2023

In the past I’ve provided a custom OUTLOOK.HOL file to add the UW Holidays to Outlook and via Outlook to your Exchange calendar.

You can read http://blogs.uw.edu/barkills/2008/11/06/uw-holidays-in-exchange-2/ for the first post where I mentioned this mechanism.

I’ve just updated the Outlook.hol file noted in that post to include the UW Holidays from 2014 thru 2023. Yeah, I got tired of doing this every year or two so I went for 10 years this time around. The link to that file is on the left … i.e. http://staff.washington.edu/barkills/OUTLOOK.HOL.

Note that this newly updated OUTLOOK.HOL file is based on the stock Outlook file with UW Holidays from 2012 & 2013 and then UW Holidays 2014-2023 added. You’ll be closing Outlook, replacing the stock file at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\1033 with this new copy (to be safe, make a copy of your stock file first), then via the File toolbar, Options, Calendar, Add Holidays…, Uncheck United States and Check UW Holidays 2014-2023.

If you are running Outlook 2013, adjust the file location as needed.

2012 and 2013 UW Holidays for Outlook

In the past I’ve provided a custom OUTLOOK.HOL file to add the UW Holidays to Outlook.

You can read http://blogs.uw.edu/barkills/2008/11/06/uw-holidays-in-exchange-2/ for the first post where I mentioned this mechanism.
I’ve just updated the Outlook.hol file noted in that post to include the 2012 & 2013 UW Holidays.

Note that this newly updated OUTLOOK.HOL file is based on the stock Outlook 2010 file with just the UW 2012 & 2013 dates added. You’ll be closing Outlook, replacing the stock file at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\1033 with this new copy (to be safe, make a copy of your stock file first), then via the File toolbar, Options, Calendar, Add Holidays…, Uncheck United States and Check UW Holidays 2012 and 2013.

Finally, I note that Outlook 2010 has an internet calendar subscription feature, where you can subscribe to a web-based calendar. I don’t know how well this feature works, or if there’s an iCal formatted calendar for the UW holidays that’s maintained somewhere already, but it’s something worth considering as a possible better solution here.

Enjoy!

OCS as Green Initiative

A couple months ago, I was fortunate to have been able to see a presentation from the University of Florida on their OCS deployment this past year.
One of the more interesting things about their presentation was that they funded their initial deployment, including the support staff, by recovering costs via power savings and securing one of the federal Green grants.
The U of F happens to have two campuses, and they calculated that meetings which involved staff from both campuses had a significant overhead in travel expenses–gas (and thus a carbon footprint), staff time to travel, parking snafus and the like.
By deploying OCS and round-table video cameras in a couple key meeting locations, they were able to significantly reduce the need for that travel, while also providing the added value of the other functionality that comes with OCS. I found this pretty interesting, especially since the UW is actively looking for ways to be more Green.
If you are interested, you can see a recording of the presentation here:http://mediasite.online.ncsu.edu/online/Viewer/?peid=f06b431c1a894a6d95f2a8d0e5d31cc9

UW Exchange Holidays revisited

Folks might recall my post quite some time ago about adding UW Holidays to UW Exchange. See http://blogs.uw.edu/barkills/2008/11/06/uw-holidays-in-exchange-2/ for the details.

I’ve updated the Outlook.hol file noted in that post to include the 2011 UW Holidays. I’ve also fixed a mistake I made that left the last two holidays of 2010 off.

Enjoy!
