ASUW QSC, in partnership with the Graduate School, is excited to announce a
collaborative summit taking place in the Fall titled “Strengthening STEM
through Diversity.” The event aims to bring together students, staff, and
faculty in STEM-related fields in order to address the needs, challenges,
and successes of underrepresented or minoritized members of these fields.
The events of the day will include plenary talks, a panel of student leaders
in STEM diversity RSOs, and a workshop with the goal of designing an action
plan for future support of diversity in STEM.
If you are interested in attending this event, please fill out the pre-registration form here. The event will be open to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff, postdocs, and any member of the UW STEM community.
The event will take place Saturday, October 8th, 2016 from 9am – 5pm at the UW Seattle Campus (room tbd). If you are interested in facilitating the events of the day, providing input into the goals (listed under read more) or future actions, or helping to sponsor the event, please contact the organizers: Nicholas Montoni (montoni@uw.edu)
and Sarah Vorpahl (svorpahl@uw.edu).
1. To identify the challenges to diversifying STEM and the needs of
underrepresented students and determine actionable solutions.
2. To build community for, generate networking opportunities among, and
spotlight the value of diverse and underrepresented students in STEM.
3. To determine best practices for the recruitment, mentorship, and
graduation of underrepresented students; identify the means to implement
them; and identify ways to distribute this information to those for whom it
may not be a concern.
