Hello: A number of students have reported receiving calls and emails from individuals claiming to be government officials, asking for money. International Students: Introduction to the U.S. Legal System

Introduction to the U.S. Legal System by the Student Legal Services Office. Student Legal Services (SLS) is a law office on the UW-Seattle campus that provides confidential legal advice and representation to its students. Students often come to SLS with issues involving landlord/tenant, contracts, family law, criminal law, and estate planning, but we also provide assistance in other areas. SLS helps to educate individual students about their legal rights and responsibilities, which enables them to make educated legal choices.

Another phone scam targeting international students

A few students have reported to our office that they received multiple phone calls from the Police department and asked  them to pay a tax payment, if they don’t pay, they will bet arrested, etc…

I called the UW Police office this morning and they are aware of this issue.  The police officer told me if any student receives such a phone call, they should report this incident to: 1-800-366-4484.

DO NOT pay any payment to the phone calls.

Phone Scam Targeting International Students

We’ve been made aware of a phone scam targeting our international students, particularly those from India.  The caller informs the student that taxes are owed and threatens arrest. The call may sound legitimate because the caller provides an “officer” name and badge number, or offers to transfer the call to someone posing as a consular official.

Please note that the legitimate Internal Revenue Service does not collect funds by phone.  If you receive such a call, please do not give the caller any bank information.  You can check with us in ISS if you have concerns or questions.

Here is a web site from the IRS about the scam: http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Repeats-Warning-about-Phone-Scams
