Special & International Electives

Special Assignment (Away) Electives

Special Elective Application

Students can register for special assignment electives within each department. Departments review and approve applications prior to forwarding on for School of Medicine Curriculum approval.  A few items to note about special assignment electives:

  • Students must have completed their MS3/Patient Care Phase required clerkships in order to take a special elective
  • Special assignment electives cannot be used for research credit or fulfilling surgical selective or advanced patient care clerkship requirements
  • Electives must be approved by the department that administers the preceptor’s specialty (ex. no FAMED electives approved by Internal Medicine)
  • Special Assignment Electives cannot be used to allow a student to take an established elective during an off-calendar timeframe

Additional Considerations for Away Assignments:

Away Special Assignment- 697s WWAMI Special Assignments- 699s
  • Outside of WWAMI region

  • Special consideration for clerkship timeframes can be made, but clerkship must always start on a Monday, and end on a Friday.
  • Must be LCME or ACGME accredited

  • Requires departmental permission
  • Requires Regional permission if outside Seattle

Note About LCME/ACGME Accredited Institutions

Students taking a special assignment elective at an LCME accredited institution or ACGME accredited Residency program only need to fill out the cover page and Special Assignment Credit Approval form in the packet. Students going to a non-LCME or ACGME accredited institution must fill out the entire packet including Student Agreement and Preceptor Agreement.

  • Most university programs (ex. Stanford University Hospital) are LCME accredited, whereas private clinics and community-based programs (ex. Providence Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane) are not.
