Disability Insurance

The SOM also encourages medical students to purchase long-term disability insurance. Disability insurance is available for all medical students. In light of the cost of education and the risks associated with practicing medicine, students are strongly encouraged to consider enrolling in a disability insurance plan. The American Medical Association supports two disability insurance plans that are designed to meet the unique needs of  heath care professionals:

Full-time students enrolled in the School of Medicine are eligible for coverage through the MedPlus Advantage plan. AMA Student Disability Income Insurance is available to medical students across the country, however it is not available in all states. Students should review the state availability of this AMA plan before purchasing.

An important note: You must apply for LTD insurance within the first 31 days of starting school to obtain coverage without having to provide evidence that you’re in good health.
