Opposing the separation of children from parents

The University of Washington Faculty Senate leadership strongly opposes the inappropriate separation of children from their parents in the implementation of border control for families seeking asylum in the USA and strongly urges that recently separated families be reunited. We support the letter of our President Cauce, who wrote “As educators, our obligations are to the future, and there is no question that if we allow this practice to continue, we will find ourselves on the wrong side of history.” http://www.washington.edu/president/2018/06/18/family-separation-cruel/.

This action is a reprehensible, unreasonable and unnecessary. It runs counter to the moral principles of this nation embodied in its founding documents as some of our most cherished and undeniable values, including liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As scholars, researchers, and teachers, we concur with President Cauce that “there are enduring and often lifelong health and mental health consequences of traumatic parent-child separation, both for parent and child.” Asylum seekers are not criminals. They should be treated with appropriate care and compassion for their plight. We urge President Trump and his administration to immediately stop this family separation action by all immigration and border control agents and immediately restore the separated children to their parents’ care.
