Aspen School District (Aspen, CO) seeks a Speech Language Pathologist to begin duties in August 2020.

 

Reports to: Director of Special Education

Terms of Employment: 9-month, certified, exempt employee.

Compensation: Certified salary schedule

Work schedule: Approximate hours of work are 7:45 AM to 3:45 PM Monday through Friday in keeping with teacher work calendar

 

Position Summary:

The purpose of this position is to screen, assess, and diagnose communication disabilities, and provide individual and group therapy and services to students with speech and language needs. SLPs train, supervise, and/or consult with educational providers and parents, and they participate in IEP processes, acting as case manager when specified. Collaborating with various school teams and parents, speech language pathologists assess the needs of each child to develop individual treatment programs, implementing, and revising as necessary to ensure student progress.

 

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Screen, assess, and diagnose communication disabilities for students birth – age 21
  • Uses assessment data about students in their environment(s) in developing appropriate programs
  • Administer, score, and interpret necessary assessments (broad and focused) to assist in determining disabling conditions, and/or tiered programming for students according to State and Federal Regulations and according to Aspen School District policies and procedures
  • Provide Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) leadership and support in assigned buildings; participate in school district MTSS teams and assist with the facilitation and documentation of research-based methods for academic and behavioral supports
  • Assist IEP teams with the development and implementation of IEPs
  • Act as a case manager for students requiring speech and language services only as stipulated on the IEP
  • Along with SLP Assistants, provide individual and group therapy and services
  • Schedule in- and out-of-class support
  • Document services provided and monitor student progress
  • Provide consultation to parents, teachers, other school personnel, and community agencies to enhance student learning and achievement.
  • Train and supervise Speech Language Pathology Assistant(s)
  • Liaison and consult with teachers, providers, administrators, parents, service agencies, and community
  • Serve as a resource for general and special education staff to promote and implement academic and behavioral supports
  • Communicate effectively sharing pertinent evaluation/observation information with parents, students, and agencies as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned or necessary

 

Position Requirements:

Minimum Education: Masters Degree

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Current Colorado Professional Special Services License with an endorsement as a Speech Language Pathologist for ages 0-21 or ability to obtain this certification within the first 3 months of hire;
  • American Speech Hearing Association (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC);
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification (must be obtained within one year of being hired and maintained each year);
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certificate – training provided by the Aspen School District (must be obtained within 6 months of being hired and maintained every 2 years)

Minimum Experience:  No experience required. SLP Certification Required

  • Mostly clean and comfortable
  • May be exposed to body fluids

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional heavy lifting in management and de-escalation of students with aggressive behaviors
  • Frequent bending, squatting, standing, reaching, walking and sitting
  • Repetitive motion

Skill Requirements: 

  • Understanding of Individual Education Program process as it relates to Special Education Law
  • Experience delivering services through inclusionary model via team teaching
  • Training in Six Trait Writing, oral motor speech exercises, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems is desirable
  • Strong computer skills including knowledge of databases
  • Ability to communicate well in English, both speaking and writing – Bilingual Spanish is preferable
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate with team members
  • Leadership skills that support program objectives
  • Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process
  • Knowledge of progress monitoring tools and techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to provide evaluation results clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing

SLP Openings in the Mesa County Valley School District 51 (CO)

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Responsible for providing a multi-tiered array of services related to Speech/Language and Communication for all students of School District 51 with consideration given to their unique developmental and intrinsic qualities. Duties performed include evaluating, identifying, assessing, and treating communication disorders including but not exclusive to speech (articulation, voice, swallowing, fluency) and language, cognitive and hearing disorders. This position provides an expertise resource to District students, staff, parents, and community service providers and as such must work cooperatively to facilitate these interactions.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. The SLP uses a variety of evidenced-based methodologies for Assessment purposes.
  2. The School SLP is part of an education team that determines the need for student evaluations and special education, if any.
  3. Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are written by the SLP once a speech/language/communication problem has been identified. SLP is the Case Manager for students identified as learning disabled regarding oral expression and/or listening comprehension.
  4. SLPs are tasked with providing the speech therapy and the manner in which it is delivered. The SLP will plan, prepare, and perform the elements identified within the students IEP in accordance with the student’s individual abilities, goals, and limitations.
  5. Meet documentation requirements guided by Mesa County Valley School District 51, federal and state laws, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. While daily case notes are used directly for the benefit of the student; they also provide support for the Medicaid billing/reimbursement processes, legal requirements, CDE requirements, and are held to the professional standards established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
  6. The responsibilities of this position include an expectation of consultation and collaboration with administration, teachers, allied professionals and families to identify and set priorities for service and functional outcome plans.
  7. SLP will attend and successfully complete all professional development training as required for licensure recertification, by state law or as directed by the Executive Director of Student Services.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

Master’s Degree required with accreditation in any of the following:

  • Speech Therapist
  • Speech Correctionist
  • Speech Language Pathologist

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Criminal background check required for hire
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license required
  • Colorado Dept. of Education (CDE) License of Special Education preferred at hire/required within 6 months of hire
  • Preference given for ASHA – Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) ASHA

SUMMARY OF TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

Legal Knowledge –

School SLPs must possess a working knowledge of and promote and enact federal, state, and District special education policies, standards, and procedures. This position is responsible for supporting District personnel in understanding and abiding by legal and ethical boundaries as outlined in the:

  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004)
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Cultural Awareness –

School SLPs must possess a basic knowledge of local cultural and linguistic diversity as it relates to understanding persons with communication disorders and differences and how services are provided.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES:

Diversity of duties includes evaluating, identifying, and/or treating any students with communication disorders. SLP is a member of many collaborative teams; special education and other building level teams, they track therapy methods, consult with other professionals regarding communication disorders, and ensure best practices are implemented. Work duties are varied, require choosing from various courses of action and may require the use and occasional modification of general guidelines.
