Becoming an Undergraduate Research Leader gives experienced students engaged in research the opportunity to work closely with URP, become part of a community of undergrad researchers, and encourage other students to get involved by sharing their own experiences and enthusiasm for research.

The Undergraduate Research Program (URP) is seeking enthusiastic and experienced undergraduate researchers from all disciplines to be Undergraduate Research Leaders (URLs) for the 2015-16 academic year. Students conducting research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences are particularly encouraged to apply.
URLs serve a central role in connecting undergraduates to support services of the URP. The goal of the URL program is to increase awareness and participation of undergraduates doing research in a range of disciplines. As a URL, you can motivate future undergraduate researchers! Anticipated URL time commitment is approximately 8-10 hours/month and dependent on quarterly events and student availability.

Opportunity to Tutor Underrepresented Youth with Seattle MESA

We are looking for engaging and motivated undergraduate and students who want to make a difference to underrepresented youth in Seattle.  Starting this fall, you can begin your training to become a Seattle MESA math and science tutor for high school students.

WHAT IS THE SEATTLE MESA TUTOR TRAINING PROGRAM ALL ABOUT?  

Seattle MESA provides opportunities and resources that inspire students traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, to pursue education and careers in math, engineering and science (http://www.seattlemesa.org/).  We are offering a tutor training and certification for UW graduate and undergraduate students as well as community members to work with Seattle high school students in math and science.

WHO CAN TUTOR?

Engaging and motivated UW graduate and undergraduate students who want to work with high school students and have a commitment to diversity and inclusion.  We are looking for students who want training and experience working in local Seattle schools with a cohort of trained peers.

Seattle MESA Tutors must complete to following:

  • Complete a Seattle MESA Introductory Tutoring Training Workshop (CENV 410).
  • Attend a weekly seminar during their first quarter of tutoring (CENV 420 offered Autumn or Winter quarters).
  • Tutor students once a week on site at a partner school during the afterschool program hours.
  • Complete and pass the appropriate subject area test.
  • Complete a background check through the Seattle Public Schools and follow UW volunteer guidelines.

HOW AND WHEN CAN I START?

Register now for the fall MESA Introductory Tutor Training Workshop (C ENV 410 Special Topics in the Fall Time Schedule). This is a 1 credit hour tutor skills and cultural competency training designed to get you ready to work one on one and in small groups with Seattle high school students in math. You will observe teachers and your students in their classrooms and complete a series of assignments and reflections.  There will be two workshop opportunities offered in fall quarter: one in October and the other in November. They meet three Wednesdays each:  Sept. 24, Oct.1 and 8 from 3-5 pm OR Nov 5,12,and 19 from 4-6pm.  All students must also be able to complete a classroom observation during the day at a local high school.

CAN SEATTLE MESA TUTORING COUNT TOWARDS MY MAJOR OR MINOR?
Maybe!  Our tutoring training program coursework can fulfill the Field Experience requirement for the ELS minor and may be considered as credits towards the Diversity minor.

Extended Registration Deadline for Paws on Science

There is still room left for additional scientists to participate in Paws-on Science. If you or your group have not signed up already, please consider taking part in this terrific event, scheduled for Friday to Sunday, April 4–6. This is a great opportunity to engage the public, gain experience presenting your research, and increase visibility of your efforts.

Researchers Needed: Paws-on-Science Weekend (April 4-6, 2014)

Paws-on Science promotional graphicThe fifth Paws-on-Science weekend has been scheduled for Friday, April 4 – Sunday, April 6, 2014 at the Pacific Science Center. During the past four years of Paws-on Science, more than 1,100 UW scientists have shared their work through hands-on activities with close to 47,000 adults and children. A follow-up survey this year found that 97% of the visitors surveyed indicated they would return to next year’s Paws-on Science weekend.
