Undergraduate Research in Marine Sciences – Maryland Sea Grant REU

Since 1989, NSF has supported bringing students to conduct individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at either Chesapeake Biological Lab or Horn Point Lab of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. This is a great opportunity to conduct research with a mentor and spend a summer by the Chesapeake Bay.

We select undergraduates in diverse disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science.

We are particularly interested in supporting talented students from institutions where access to marine science and to research projects is limited and who are from underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Summer Undergraduate Research Program at UW – Deadline April 10th

Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) offers students the opportunity to work in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics research position that will complement their studies. Student researchers work under the guidance of a faculty member, postdoctoral scholar or research scientist at the University of Washington.

Projects are available in most fields of physical and natural sciences, engineering and earth sciences (see the 2014 reception program for projects undertaken by last year’s SURP students). Some projects may involve off-campus locations or fieldwork.

Students currently working on a research project or interested in working with a specific faculty member may request that project and/or faculty member on their form.

Applicants are selected by the faculty member supervising the individual projects. Once selected, the student and faculty adviser establish a schedule of work time and goals for the project. Students may apply for either part-time or full-time positions.

Eligibility: UW undergraduate students in good academic standing who are interested in research in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM fields) are eligible to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and Washington state residents.
Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and non-graduating seniors are eligible.

Students who attend schools belonging to the Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium may be admitted on a space-available basis.

Program Dates: June 22 – August 21, 2015

Research Schedule: Each faculty member-student team will develop a schedule that fits their particular time constraints and project needs.

Award rates: Part-time researchers will receive $2,000 for the nine-week program; full-time researchers will receive $4,000. Awards will be disbursed through the summer.

Summer Research: National Center for Toxicological Research

ORISE Summer Student Research Participation Opportunity at NCTR

 Introduction

Summer research opportunities are available at the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Jefferson, Arkansas.  This program is designed for science and mathematics students preparing for future careers in toxicology, regulatory science, or related scientific disciplines. Selected individuals will participate in research projects on the biological effect of potentially toxic chemicals and the solutions to toxicology problems that have a major impact on human health and the environment.

The appointment period is for up to 10 weeks beginning May 27, 2014.  The participant will receive a stipend depending on education level and experience. The Research Participation Program for FDA is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education under an agreement with FDA and the Department of Energy (DOE).  Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE, or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Research Opportunity: Algebraic graph theory

Descrip­tion:

The student would learn the relevant background in algebra and graph theory, in particular the matrix-tree theorem and the fundamental theorem of finitely generated abelian groups. With this knowledge, we would embark on studying the critical group of a graph. This would involve extensive computer exploration of these groups using the computer algebra system Macaulay2.

Require­ments:

4xx level abstract algebra or real analysis or combinatorics in the UW Department of Math, or equivalent coursework at another institution.

The student should supply the name of a mathematics professor who can recommend them.
