Summer 2016 UNLV REU in Mechanisms of Evolution – Apps due March 4th

The UNLV REU Site: Mechanisms of Evolution is accepting applications for summer 2016.

Undergraduate projects funded by the REU Site: Mechanisms of Evolution focus on biological processes, such as mutation, genetic drift, migration, non-random mating and natural selection that drive heritable change. The inspiration for this proposal is the celebrated essay, Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution by Theodosius Dobzansky.

Research projects are available in the following disciplines: bioinformatics, field ecology, systematics, molecular biology and physiology

Stipend: $5,250
Travel award and double occupancy housing is provided

Application deadline: Friday March 4, 2016

Students from underrepresented groups and from academic institutions with limited research opportunities, including two-year colleges, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program for STEM students at UW – App. due April 15th

Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is now open for application and closes on April 15, 2016.

SURP is a summer quarter undergraduate research opportunity for STEM undergraduates at the University of Washington. The SURP awards are $5,000 for a full time summer intern (40 hours a week) and $2,500 for a part-time summer intern (20 hours a week). The program dates are from June 20 – August 19.

These awards are made possible through UW faculty/scientists and Space Grant collaborations.

The Marine Physical Laboratory, at UC San Diego’s world renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is currently seeking inquisitive, motivated undergraduate students with exceptional aptitude for quantitative science to apply for the 2016 MPL Summer Internship Program.

Undergraduate college students majoring in Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Geology are encouraged to apply. This ten-week internship will offer qualified students the opportunity to work with some of the most notable scientists in the world and learn about marine science and technology while earning a modest salary.

About You
* Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at a college or university with a major applicable to research done at MPL and NOT in your senior year.
* Considering a career in scientific research
* Available to start at MPL in La Jolla, CA on or after June 1, 2016, and work the duration of the internship, ten consecutive weeks from the start date, for 40 hours per week at a salary of $14/hr.
* A U.S. citizen or permanent resident and NOT a previous MPL intern
* OK with working a short distance from some of Southern California’s best beaches and surf

About Us
The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) is an organized research unit of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and lab at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Originally established as a Navy-orientated research laboratory in 1946, MPL has maintained a strong multidisciplinary research program consisting entirely of sponsored projects, with a large sponsorship from the Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

2016 Wireless Health Research Experience at U of Virginia – App Due Feb. 22nd

UVA Center for Wireless Health – Research Opportunity for Undergraduates

The UVA Center for Wireless Health REU will bring 10 undergraduate
students to UVA for an eight-week summer research experience.
Participants will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with faculty
mentors, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows from varied disciplines
including: electrical and computer engineering, computer science, and
systems information technology in the UVa Engineering School as well as
nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry, cardiology,
biomechanics, geriatric nursing, and orthopedics in the Medical School.
Wireless Health REU draws on advances in wireless networks, integrated
circuits, sensing, signal processing, communication, data mining, and
databases to address a critical societal challenge: improving the quality and
accessibility of health care while reducing associated costs.

CCCR Summer Undergraduate Minority Research Program: Deadline Feb. 15th

The Center for Colon Cancer Research (CCCR) at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC is leading the development of innovative and ground-breaking research in colorectal cancer. One of the primary goals of the CCCR is to foster the progression of young scientists, and we are seeking undergraduate students to participate in research in­ternships in a cancer-related field (e.g., biological sciences, pharmacy, public health) during our Summer Undergraduate Minority Research Program.

Program details:

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship program offers opportunities for study, research and internships in Germany, as well as a wide variety of funding opportunities for students and including summer research internships for students in the sciences.

Summer Research Opportunity – Deadline April 15th

New Summer Experience investigating the effect of radionuclides on the environment

Students will work both in the field and lab to investigate the impacts of radionuclides  on the environment first hand. You will examine
i) the fate of radionuclides in environmental systems;
ii) the impact of radionuclides on the environment; and
iii) biogeochemical and physiological processes by means of tracer studies.

This program teams with Savannah River Ecology Lab (SREL), which studies radioecology in national and international arenas (e.g., Chernobyl and Fukushima) and houses the only chronic low-dose experimental facility in the world.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program at UW – Deadline April 10th

Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) offers students the opportunity to work in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics research position that will complement their studies. Student researchers work under the guidance of a faculty member, postdoctoral scholar or research scientist at the University of Washington.

Projects are available in most fields of physical and natural sciences, engineering and earth sciences (see the 2014 reception program for projects undertaken by last year’s SURP students). Some projects may involve off-campus locations or fieldwork.

Students currently working on a research project or interested in working with a specific faculty member may request that project and/or faculty member on their form.

Applicants are selected by the faculty member supervising the individual projects. Once selected, the student and faculty adviser establish a schedule of work time and goals for the project. Students may apply for either part-time or full-time positions.

Eligibility: UW undergraduate students in good academic standing who are interested in research in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM fields) are eligible to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and Washington state residents.
Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and non-graduating seniors are eligible.

Students who attend schools belonging to the Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium may be admitted on a space-available basis.

Program Dates: June 22 – August 21, 2015

Research Schedule: Each faculty member-student team will develop a schedule that fits their particular time constraints and project needs.

Award rates: Part-time researchers will receive $2,000 for the nine-week program; full-time researchers will receive $4,000. Awards will be disbursed through the summer.

Archaeology Research Opportunity for Undergraduates – March 27th App. Deadline

The Bronze Age Körös Off-Tell Archaeological (BAKOTA) Field School is a summer undergraduate research program sponsored by Quinnipiac University and the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site program. Students accepted into the program will work with an international, multidisciplinary research team on the excavation and analysis of a Middle Bronze Age cemetery and settlement in eastern Hungary. Student travel, housing, food, field trip fees, etc. will be covered by the NSF in addition to a $500/week stipend (total $3,000). Ten Fellows will be selected from the pool of applicants. Eligibility: students must be a US citizen or permanent resident, and currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.

The BAKOTA project is studying a Bronze Age cemetery population in eastern Hungary, and aims to understand how this region intensified farming, craft production, and trade without corresponding increases in social inequality. Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

The BCMB Department at UT-Knoxville will once again offer a special REU program for undergraduates interested in hands-on scientific research experience.

The broad focus is on Sensing and Signaling in Biological Systems. The team of REU faculty represent multiple modern scientific disciplines including cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, physical chemistry, and computational biology.

We especially encourage rising sophomores and rising junior undergraduate science majors to apply.

Underrepresented minorities, women, and first generation college students are also strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be a US citizen or a permanent resident.
