Student Research Fellowships




The AOA Carolyn Kuckein National Student Research Fellowship is a research opportunity which provides up to $6,000 in research funding for medical students each year. Historically UW students have been very successful at winning this prestigious award. This fellowship can fund research done over the summer, “year-out” projects, or year-long projects during your regular pre-clinical or clinical years. This fellowship provides: (i) an opportunity to get involved in research; (ii) an opportunity to get up to $6,000; and (iii) a prestigious award to add to your CV.

The application is structured like a mini-grant, and includes: (i) a four-page summary of the research project with bibliography; (ii) your CV; (iii) a letter of support from your mentor as well as their biosketch; and (iv) proof of IRB or IACUC approval or submission for approval if needed. Award amount: $5,000 plus up to $1,000 for travel

Application deadline: The deadline passed on December 31st, 2018. We will be posting the deadline for 2019 when that information becomes available!

Application process:
The top student application from the UW will be submitted to compete on the national level for 50 award spots.

What kind of research can I do?
Any original clinical, basic science, or translational research will qualify, so long as it can be accomplished during your time in medical school.

But I don’t have a research mentor lined up!
Members of the UW AOA chapter are happy to assist you in formulating and drafting your research proposal or finding a suitable research mentor.

Eligibility requirements:
First-, second-, and third-year students are eligible. MD/PhD students are not eligible for this fellowship.
