Undergraduate students who take private voice at University of Washington are required to also sing in a choral ensemble. MMs in Vocal Performance who receive scholarship in their first year are required to be in a chorus. DMA students are exempt from this requirement in order to focus on their solo recitals.
Choral participation teaches pre-professional singers valuable skills in performance practice and musicianship while providing opportunities for extra solo work. Many UW voice alumni round out their career activities by serving as section leaders in semi-professional choruses or even conducting their own ensembles. Tenure track positions in voice often require a second area of specialization such as choral conducting.
